5 Surprising Foods You Didn’t Know Were Healthy for Dogs

When it comes to feeding our furry friends, most pet parents are cautious about introducing new foods. However, some ingredients that have been unfairly labeled as “dangerous” can actually offer great health benefits when given in the right amounts. Here are five surprising foods that can be healthy additions to your dog’s diet.

1. Garlic

Yes, you read that right—garlic! Despite its bad reputation, garlic is actually beneficial for dogs when fed in appropriate amounts. It has natural antibacterial, antifungal, and immune-boosting properties. Garlic also helps repel fleas and ticks, supports cardiovascular health, and may even have anti-cancer properties. The key is proper dosage:

  • 5 lb dog – 1/6 tsp

  • 10 lb dog – 1/3 tsp

  • 15 lb dog – 1/2 tsp

  • 20 lb dog – 2/3 tsp

  • Over 30 lb – 1 tsp per every 30 lbs.

Be sure to use fresh, raw garlic and allow it to sit for 10 minutes after chopping to activate its beneficial compounds.

2. Mushrooms (Certain Varieties)

While some wild mushrooms are toxic, certain varieties like shiitake, maitake, and reishi are incredibly beneficial for dogs. These mushrooms are packed with antioxidants, beta-glucans, and polysaccharides that boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, and support liver health. Always cook and cut into small pieces before feeding, and never let your dog eat wild mushrooms unless you are 100% sure they are safe.

3. Anchovies & Sardines

Small fish like anchovies and sardines are nutritional powerhouses for dogs and cats. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which support joint health, reduce inflammation, and promote a shiny coat. Additionally, they contain essential vitamins like B12 and D, as well as calcium and phosphorus. Choose wild-caught, no-salt options packed in water, and feed in moderation (see our raw food cheat sheet for more information).

4. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is more than just a spice—it’s a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich ingredient that can help regulate blood sugar levels and improve brain function in dogs. A small sprinkle (about 1/8 tsp for small dogs and up to 1/2 tsp for large dogs) can be added to their meals. Ceylon cinnamon is the best option, as it has lower levels of coumarin, which can be harmful in large quantities.

5. Raw Goat’s Milk

Raw goat’s milk is an incredible superfood for dogs, packed with probiotics, digestive enzymes, and essential vitamins and minerals. It supports gut health, strengthens the immune system, and can even help with allergies. Unlike cow’s milk, goat’s milk is easier to digest due to its smaller fat molecules and lower lactose content. Look for raw, unpasteurized goat’s milk from a trusted source, and introduce it slowly to avoid digestive upset.

Foods That ARE Toxic to Dogs

While some foods get an unfairly bad reputation, others truly are dangerous for dogs. Here are a few foods that should always be avoided:

  • Raisins & Grapes – Even small amounts can cause kidney failure in dogs.

  • Onions & Garlic (in large amounts) – While garlic in small doses is beneficial, large amounts, as well as all forms of onion, can cause dangerous anemia.

  • Chocolate – Contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and can cause vomiting, seizures, and even death.

  • Xylitol – This artificial sweetener, found in sugar-free gum and some peanut butters, can cause severe hypoglycemia and liver failure.

  • Macadamia Nuts – Can cause weakness, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia.

  • Alcohol & Caffeine – Even small amounts can be toxic and lead to serious health complications.

Final Thoughts

Many pet myths have led to unnecessary food restrictions for our dogs. While moderation and proper dosage are key, incorporating these surprising superfoods into your pup’s diet can lead to improved health, better digestion, and a stronger immune system. However, it’s just as important to know which foods to avoid to keep your dog safe. Always introduce new foods gradually and consult with a knowledgeable pet nutritionist or holistic vet if you’re unsure about dietary changes.
